Zoom Fatigue

How is the new normal working for you? I was interested to read an article on Zoom Fatigue (link in first comment).

I don’t dispute the challenge of adopting online communications if that wasn’t the norm.

But it’s not something I can relate to.

I started managing a global team 15 years ago, which meant calls at all hours. The introduction of video improved relationship building with my distant colleagues.

Moving to the Philippines in 2009 meant that weekly management meetings were with video. Those with my boss and colleagues, and those with my staff.

In the 6 years I’ve been running my own business in the Philippines, almost all meetings with clients are remote. Face to face meetings happen maybe annually on an overseas visit, or if my clients visit me.

This year, none of those things are happening.

When on a call, I turn on video even if the other participants don’t.

I find it keeps me focused and accountable. I don’t concentrate anywhere near as well on voice-only calls. The lure of distractions is too great.

The article mentions that Zoom fatigue may abate once people adjust. Maybe that happened to me. Now, I’d find a day full of in-person meetings more challenging than my video conferencing routine.
