Decision Making during a Pandemic

I wouldn’t like to be a decision maker for community lockdowns.

Finding the right balance seems impossible.

We know the longer we are locked down, the higher the likelihood that we will eliminate this virus. And that saves lives. Prevents suffering.

Conversely we don’t want “the cure to be worse than the disease”.

Here in the Philippines, there are millions of day workers. No benefits, no support system. The lockdown will see many of them starve.

Call centers that used 1 desk and PC across 3 shifts in a 24 hour period could only deploy maximum 1/3rd of their staff to home. Thousands of workers were displaced.

Others are forced to sleep, eat and work in the office in what has been described as “inhumane conditions” (link in first comment).

Surely the land equivalent of a cruise ship as far as the virus is concerned.

They have not been forced by their employer, but by necessity.

The government cannot afford to feed the country.

I can’t predict how the coming months will unfold. Like everyone, everywhere, the only consistency in our lives is uncertainty.

For now, my workforce, my family and friends are earning, safe and healthy.

I don’t envy the decision makers, the task ahead of them.

Do you support extended lockdowns?
