Raw – Day 7
Most dietary styles have rules and guidelines that people interpret and implement in their own way. Some vegans eat sugar even though animal parts are used in the processing. Some vegetarians don’t eat eggs, some do.
In the raw food movement, the most consistent rule is that food isn’t heated above 46 C / 115 F, as that is the temperature that allegedly destroys nutrients. Yet cashews and agave often feature as ingredients, even though heat is almost always used to produce both.
Carol Alt is a raw foodie who is not a vegan, as most are. She follows the no-heat rule, but includes sashimi, carpaccio and tartare in her lifestyle which means she still eats fish and beef. To end my week of raw, I followed her lead and concluded with lightly seared but mostly raw tuna with salad for my final dinner (pictured).
In case you’re wondering, I lost 2.2 kg over the week, but expect to rebound almost a kilo when I resume eating non-raw food as the digestive processes slow down. I feel like I’ve been scrubbed clean from the inside, but had very low energy today – I’m eating less protein than true raw foodies eat, by avoiding legumes. I still have some raw burgers left, and I’m looking forward to eating those with a fried egg on top.
